私が訪れた日はこんな素晴らしいお天気。だのに土地の人は「種子島は一年400日雨が降る」と言って笑う。
そういえばロケットや人工衛星の打ち上げがこれでもか、これでもかと延期されるのはお馴染みのことだ。しかしここは、天候は今ひとつだが他の面では宇宙センターの条件を満たしている。一般人に影響を与えない広大な土地、人工光が少ない、または全く無い、海に囲まれ材料や部品の運搬が容易である、など。
人が寝静まった時間に巨大なロケット部品が運搬されるため種子島の信号は高い位置に設けられ、信号パネルが折りたためるようになっている。これから宇宙に行く部品が人知れずしずしずと運ばれてゆく・・・なんだかぞっくとするほどステキだ!!
ここは世界でいちば～～ん美しい宇宙センターなのだそうだ。安納芋や紫芋の焼酎も素晴らしい芳香・・・
When we visited Tanegashima, it was beautifully fine, but the local people said it rains 400 days a year and laugh.
So the Space Center has good reason to postpone each rocket- or satellite-launching so many times. But the place meets the requirements as far as isolation to prevent effects over the general people, less or almost no artificial lights around, convenient access from the sea to transport materials and parts, etc.
The traffic lights in the Island are installed at very high position and foldable. A villager told me that in the wee hours, a huge part of a rocket is often carried on the village road quietly. How thrilled I was to hear and imagine that!
The Tanegashima Space Center is known as the most beautiful space center in the world. Besides the Island produces very good Shochu, a clear distilled liquor, out of special kinds of sweet potatoes as Anno-imo and Murasaki-imo. It tastes good and beautiful, too.

美しい海でしょう？空も広～くて何も遮るものが無い世界でした。
誰も居ない浜辺にははかなげな貝殻や珊瑚のかけらが宝石のように
散りばめられていて・・・一度訪れたら曽野さんならずとも虜になりますよ。
そうですの、あやつ人々から「晴れ～」と呼ばれてます。
旅行には少々邪魔でも必需品のような人物です。(笑)

When I was there, I thought Mr. Servant would like the island. Because all you have over you there is a sky. I thought the idea about the traffic lights fascinating, too. It is a very charming island.

I wonder if they fold the traffic lights down to reduce the light pollution in the sky or to get their equipment along the roads without hitting any obstructions? My manservant would love to visit Tanegashima I’m sure.

They say that happens only when a rocket is carried.
A half of Japan underwent a black-out roll due to power shortage after the earthquake and the flood. We experienced four-hour total blackout at a time. No traffic light, no street light・・・no electricity at all.
Some noticed the beauty of the stars and the moon, the value of silence, the joy of family talking and others so many useless electric materials binding our life. So why not fold all the traffic lights at night to ease light pollution.
