原爆の子の像　The Children’s Peace Monument

原爆による白血病で闘病中、千羽の折鶴を折ると願いがかなうという言い伝えをよすがに病床で鶴を折り続け12歳で死去した佐々木貞子さんがモデルの像。禎子さんの同級生の募金運動で作られ、原爆で命を落とした多くの子どもを代表する像。いつ訪れてもたくさんの千羽鶴が捧げられている。修学旅行の同年輩の子どもたちが朗読する詩や奏でる鎮魂の音楽にいつ訪れても思わず胸がふっと熱くなってしまう。この子供たちが核兵器の脅威にさらされることなく幸せに暮らせますように!

While in the hospital due to radiation-induced leukemia, the model of the statue, Sadako, started folding A-Thousand-Folded-Cranes to make her wish of recovery come true as our tradition told but she could not make it and died. Her classmates started a fund-raising campaign and the wave spread to build a statue representing the thousands of child victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

I made several visits to the place. But each time when I see young children visiting the place on a school excursion reading a poem loud, playing music, or offering artistic Thousand-Folded-Cranes to the Statue of Sadako, I am moved deeply.

May these young people live happily without the threat of nuclear weapons!
