お出迎え 下船時乗客の手首にミサンガを結んでくれました。/ The ladies in traditional costume to greet us passengers. They tied a miçanga on each passenger’s wrist when we disembarked.

ブラジル　バイーア州都　サルバドール

1549年から1763年までの200余年、首都がリオデジャネイロに移転するまでブラジルの首都であったサルバドール。サトウキビの取引で栄えたという。歴史の流れの中で人口構成ができていったが、今も黒人と、ムラートと呼ばれる混血の人口が総人口の75％を超える。これはブラジルでも特異な都市のうちに入る。

街は断崖で上町（シダーデ・アルタ）と下町（シダーデ・バイシャ）に分かれている。カナダのケベックの街を彷彿させる。サルバドールも植民地時代の遺産の多い高台と商業地区の下町に分かれ、ふたつは24時間稼働の大きなエレべーター（Elevador Lacerda） で行き来できる。柱状の高さ728メートルのエレベーターは料金一回15レアル＝7円

歴史に満ちた風格のある街ではあるが、とても金銭感覚がしっかりしていて、というかし過ぎていて時折興ざめ。それにどろぼうさんがとても多いので船からも被害にあわないように、懇切丁寧な注意が再三あっての外出。それでもなんだか不思議な魅力があって・・・かつての都の残り香なのだろうか・・・リオのカーニバルに負けず劣らずのカーニバルでも有名。

とにかく、とうとう「ミッキーとミニーの世界旅行」に出てくる「バイーア」にやってきたのでした！

São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santosor

Salvador was simply known as Bahia. I came to know it through a Disney’s film, “Mickey and Minnie’s Around-the-world Travel” Here I am, too, at Bahia!

The City was Brazil’s capital for over 200 years since 1549. It flourished in sugar cane trade. In its long history, Afro-Brazilians and biracials once called Mulatto compose 75% of its population . That is unique among many other Brazilian cities, they say. The historic architectures from the 17th to the 19th centuries that are World Heritage Site since 1985 impressed me here very much. The Salvador’s carnival is known as well as that of Rio.

The escarpment divides Salvador into the Upper Town (Cidade Alta) and Lower Town (Cidade Baixa) just like Quebec, Canada. In Salvador the two town is connected by Elevador Lacerda, a 78-meter-high elevator working 24 hours for only R$0.15(about US 6 cents).
